Easter String Eggs

Description

This is an activity that all ages can have fun making...a little messy but such a cute result! Decorate with these string eggs for Easter and in a basket or hang on an Easter Tree.

Materials

  • Liquid Starch or Elmer's Glue
  • Yarn in various colors or multi colored yarn.
  • Parchment paper or non stick pan to dry on
  • Scissors with pointed tip
  • Newspaper to work on

Steps

  • Cut about 4-6 arms stretch worth of yarn. (5 feet each piece)
  • Blow up a few water balloons and tie securely.
  • Soak in the liquid starch or glue mixture thoroughly.
  • Start wrapping string around the balloon.
  • Wrap going in various directions. Go sideways, diagonal, vertical to get the most interesting pattern.
  • Let dry thoroughly on waxed paper, parchment paper or on a cookie tray. Do not dry on newspaper, it will stick to the project.
  • It will take two full days to dry thoroughly. When dry, using tip of scissors, pop the balloon and pull out of the yarn egg.
  • Fill with Easter grass and eggs or candy.

Tips and Suggestions

  • This toddler activity is relatively simple. You may need to guide your child to wrap the yarn around the balloon rather than just turning the balloon so that the yarn spreads out and covers most areas.
  • Cut shorter lengths for a younger toddler.
  • Leaving a few spaces leaves a nice effect when removing the balloon. If you put a lot of yarn it will turn more into a ball shape than an egg.
  • A water balloon is a good size if you want it to look similar to the size of an egg. It is also easier for little hands to wrap string around securely.

Other Ideas

  • Here are some using multi colored yarn.
  • Put glitter in the glue or liquid starch.
  • Crochet thread can be used in place of yarn. I selected yarn because I thought it might be easier for the girls to work with this.

    Cut a hole in the side in the shape of an oval. Glue on lace around the edge of the hold with craft glue. Put Easter grass and a little pom pom chick inside. Use ribbon or fishing line to make a loop to hang on an Easter Tree
